Attack the Block
Attack the Block (2011) dir. by Joe Cornish
winner of MANY film festival awards in 2011, as well as a Special Mention at the 2011 Black Film Critics Circle Awards: "Attack The Block is a genre film that defies a number of conventions, not only by having a primarily Black cast but portraying each character with a dignity seldom seen on screen and even more rarely in a Science-Fiction film."
A group of South London teenagers protect their council estate, or “block,” from an alien invasion.
Moses, Pest, Dennis, Jerome, and Biggz mug a young nurse on Guy Fawkes Night and soon after a large “firework” strikes a nearby car. While searching the posh vehicle for valuables, Moses is scratched by an unidentified creature as it escapes from the wreck. The boys chase and kill the alien creature — but larger, angrier aliens start to arrive. As the gang tries unsuccessfully to fight the creatures, they discover that the young nurse they frightened earlier also lives on the block…and they need her help.
This is a great recommendation for teens who loved Stranger Things, although Attack the Block moves much faster, is more violent, and uses stronger language. It also addresses more mature themes, such as socioeconomic tension and racial profiling. You may need to watch the film with subtitles if you’re not familiar with British slang — it’s definitely worth it! Attack the Block stars John Boyega (*ahem* Finn from Star Wars) and Jodie Whittaker (the newest Dr. Who!)
